Archez

Of Archez's Arab past only one jewel remains: the Nazarí tower or minaret of the church Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación (Nazarí meaning: from the descendant of the 13th-15th century Muslim dynasty in Granada). It dates from the 15th century and stands 15 meters high. It is considered as the most beautiful minaret of the region and was declared a national monument in 1979. The minaret is decorated with entwined diamond shapes with curved edges which are cut away above the brick. On the four sides of the structure a ceramic border has been conserved. The upper part is adorned in the typical Arab style. The semidetached church was built centuries later and has a single nave with wooden paneling.

The most widespread and exquisite local dish is still the white garlic gazpacho. Other dishes to try include migas (fried bread crumbs), picadillo (stew made from meat, streaky bacon, vegetables and garlic) and potaje de hinojos (fennel and vegetable hotpot). In Semana Santa (Easter's Holy Week) the most typical dishes are potaje de garbanzos con bacalao (chickpea stew with salted cod) and tortas de bacalao (salted cod pancakes) served with molasses. Roscos de vino (small ring-shaped pastries with wine), uvas al vino (grapes in wine) and moscatel grapes are typical desserts.
