Main reason for the airport’s foundation in 1919, was to connect the French colonies in Africa with Toulouse (France).

Since its opening the airport hasn’t stopped growing due to the high demand of tourists and also had a big influence on the tourism boom in the 60’s.

The plans for the improvement of the airport are still far to be finished in 2009 but together with the construction of the underground in Málaga and the alterations made to the main train station “Maria Zambrano”, they offer great new possibilities for an extended growth of the tourism sector.
