Malaga museums – All information, prices, schedules and free admission

The following list of Malaga museums offers information on opening hours, seasons, prices and information on when they can be visited for free, as long as this information is available from the official website.

This information is presented for guidance, as it could change at any time. If you plan to visit any of them, I recommend taking a look at the official website or by clicking on the link provided in each of the museums.

Museum of Malaga

This century old museum shows us art collections all year round in Malaga. It has a library and art and archaeology areas. There is also a restaurant and cafeteria.

The museum is located in the Customs Palace, a building which construction began in 1789 and it is one of the most popular Malaga museums in the city.

Picasso Museum

In this museum you will be able to know the works of Pablo Picasso. It is located in the historic centre of Malaga, near the Cathedral and the Roman Theatre.

Picasso Foundation, Birthplace Museum

The aim of this foundation is to promote and disseminate the work and figure of Pablo Picasso. There is a reading room, a public library, computers and a large catalogue of art magazines.

Jorge Rando Museum

The slogan of this museum is to be the first and only expressionist museum in Spain. It focuses on disseminating the work of the painter Jorge Rando.

Pompidou Centre

Gibralfaro Castle Museum

when visiting Malaga museums you cannot miss this one located in an old building; it was used as a powder magazine during the eighteenth century. There is an exhibition showing life in the Castle since 1487 with showcases dedicated to the centuries between the 16th and 20th centuries.

Alcazaba Archeological Exhibition Hall

This room has a permanent collection of ceramics from the 11th to 14th centuries. when visiting this museum you will see some of the treasures that have been found in the Alcazaba.

Malaga Municipal Heritage Museum

At the foot of the Alcazaba is the Malaga Municipal Heritage Museum. A place where you can discover the historical and artistic heritage of the province and where there is a permanent exhibition.

Russian Museum

Malaga museum with many objects from the 15th and 20th centuries and temporary exhibitions.

Malaga Football Club Museum

If you like football you can’t miss a visit to the museum in La Rosaleda Stadium. You will be able to know the history of the team from its beginnings.

The tour will be guided in Spanish and English.

Revello de Toro Museum

The former home of the sculptor Pedro de Mena (1628-1688) is now a picture gallery located in the city centre, very close to the Malaga Cathedral. The building is a typical example of 17th century Malaga architecture.

The museum offers free, closed-door night tours, workshops for children from 6 to 12 years old and also has a souvenir shop and a bookstore.

Carmen Thyssen Museum

This museum brings together the main collections of Andalusian and Spanish painting from the early nineteenth century to the twentieth century. Those visiting Malaga museums and love art, should take a visit to this one.

House-Museum Gerald Brenan

British writer who lived in Malaga since 1919 and is considered one of the leading Hispanists of the twentieth century.

Museum of the Imagination

Principia Science Centre

CAC Malaga

The Museum of Contemporary Art of Malaga is very close to the last stop of the commuter train. It is a modern art centre with free entrance and shows exhibitions of international and Spanish artists.

Automobile Museum

Museum dedicated to the automobile with exclusive vehicles and historical haute couture pieces. It is located in the old building of the Royal Tobacco Factory and also offers temporary workshops for children.

Museum of Popular Arts and Customs

The museum is located in an old inn from the XVII century next to the Guadalmedina river. In its different rooms is represented the life of Malaga both urban and rural.

Interactive Music Museum (Mimma)

This museum in Malaga is an opportunity to learn about a large number of instruments from different cultures, countries and time periods. It is a museum in which the visitor is allowed to interact and is divided into different rooms along 1450 square meters.

There are different events such as didactic visits, music workshops, concerts and activities during Christmas or other special occasions.

Roman Theatre Interpretation Centre

Built in the 1st century and used until the 2nd century, the Roman Theatre is one of the city’s jewels that you shouldn’t miss.

Alborania Maritime Museum

Discover the Mediterranean Sea in this museum dedicated to marine species and their habitat. There are activities such as workshops on weekends included in the price and educational talks for children.

Wine Museum in Malaga

Palace of Biedmas, 18th century

Among the Malaga museums there is one for wine. It is located in the old Palace of Biedmas, built in the eighteenth century and renovated for its inauguration in 2008.

Cathedral, museum and roof

Discover one of the city’s Renaissance jewels among the Malaga museums; This cathedral rises imposing above the old town and invites us to delve into its history.

It was built on an old mosque between 1487 and 1768. It has an 87 metres tower, being the highest Cathedral in Andalucia. However the South tower is unfinished.

The entrance price includes the audio guide in 7 languages: Spanish, English, Portuguese, Dutch, German, Russian and Italian.

Malaga Glass and Crystal Museum

This museum is composed of more than 3000 pieces of glass from different periods. It is housed in an 18th century house.

In addition to the visit to the museum you can attend workshops related to the manufacture of glass and the incidence of light in our way of perceiving colours and objects.

The visits are always guided and no reservation is necessary. The languages available are Spanish, English, French and Italian.

Botanical and Historical Garden La Concepcion

Looking for something more beside Malaga museums? This garden was a botanical project that began in the mid-nineteenth century with exotic plants brought from different cities in Europe. The garden was handed down through different generations until it was finally abandoned; the city council of Malaga recovered it for public use in 1990.

This botanical garden contains plants introduced prior to the year 1800 and has been expanded with specimens beyond the year 1900.

Throughout the year there are activities such as Halloween night, where there are costume contests and other surprises.
